Hi there, I’m Krista, an experienced Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) based out of
Nanaimo B.C., with a passion for supporting individuals through their healing journeys.
While my primary focus has been on working with young individuals grappling with life
transitions, anxiety, depression, and grief and loss, my journey has led me to intersect
with various demographics.
My experience in Sexual Abuse Intervention Programs (SAIP) has not only honed my
skills in supporting youth and parent survivors but has also provided me with valuable
insights into the challenges faced by educators. Through these programs, I’ve had the
opportunity to collaborate with teachers, understanding the unique stressors they
encounter and the importance of prioritizing their mental well-being.
In my practice, I approach therapy as a collaborative and non-judgmental space where
clients can explore their issues at their own pace. Drawing from my background as a
certified yoga teacher and vipassana meditator, I emphasize the connection between
the body, mind, and heart in the healing process. This holistic approach allows
individuals to rediscover their inherent wisdom and find balance amidst life’s challenges. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an
evidence-based therapy proven effective in treating trauma and various mental health
concerns by facilitating the processing of distressing memories and experiences.
I currently offer in person sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays based in my Nanaimo
offices, and virtual sessions the remainder of the week. I look forward to the opportunity
to support you, whether you’re a teacher seeking guidance or an individual on the path
to healing.

Marla’s connections with young people are based on relationships of mutual respect and trust. She builds safe counselling spaces by meeting youth where they are at, listening without judgment, and empowering them as the experts of their own stories. Marla’s approach is trauma-informed, person-centred and celebrates the diversity of the incredible youth she is grateful to work with. Marla believes that positive growth and change are possible when we nurture learning, connectedness, empowerment, and trust in our own capacities to care for ourselves.

However, beneath the surface, many individuals struggle with an internal tension—a feeling that, no matter what they do, think, or feel, it will never be good enough. This relentless pursuit of worthiness can weigh heavily on us, particularly when we’ve faced trauma, emotional challenges, insecure relationships, stress, anxiety, or pain. These detours in life may alter our maps, steering us towards despair and uncertainty. It’s during these times that we can feel isolated and alone. Katelynn acknowledges that not everyone’s journey resembles this description, and she welcomes and affirms your unique path. Regardless of your experiences, she encourages you to show up to counselling just as you are, without judgment or expectations.
With a diverse background encompassing her studies as a current Masters in Counselling Psychology graduate from Yorkville University, her work as a forest school Canada teacher, early years educator, yoga instructor, and her role as a wife and mother of three, Katelynn brings a wealth of experiences to her practice. A Little Bit About Me:
Professional Education:
I have done all of my studies at UBC with a B.Sc. in Cell Biology, a B.Ed with a major in Secondary Science and a minor in Special Education. After my teaching degree was finished, I concentrated on my M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology, which took some time as it coincided with two maternity leaves and a move to the Sunshine Coast but was truly a transformational opportunity! My recent professional development has focused on completing my training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) which I completed this past summer. This now enables me to use this amazing counselling strategy to help with concerns related to trauma.
Professional Experience:
I have taught nearly every grade level in both secondary and elementary but have spent the majority of my teaching years in Inclusive Education as a Learning Assistance teacher, Special Education Teacher and Teacher Counselor at both elementary and secondary. From teaching, I moved to an administrative position, then as District Principal of Support Services and then finally as Director of Instruction for Student Support Services for the Sunshine Coast School District. In 2019, I made a major leap and left the Coast to move to the Island and semi-retire “a little”. I went back to the classroom as an Inclusive Support Teacher and Counsellor three days a week to stay current with my practice while also working as a Sessional Instructor at the University of Victoria. In 2020 I returned to administration as District Principal of Safe and Healthy Schools for the Sooke School District, which I was very excited about and am still enjoying as my “day job”. As part of my portfolio, my work is focused on staff wellness and educator resiliency, which has been a key area of my own professional development.
Personal Information:
My job gives me immense satisfaction as I love the varied work and fast pace of my days. No day is ever the same as the next! Being back in the classroom was very stimulating and reminded me why I chose this profession in the first place – to work with children and help them develop a love for learning. Working with both pre-service and experienced teachers at UVIC has been a dream come true!
Outside of school and work, I love to hike, cook and spend time in my garden. Currently we are in the middle of building our dream home on the West Coast and I am looking forward to this Summer when it should finally be finished and I can begin my private counselling practice, focusing on wellness and mental health while also providing opportunities for educator retreats.
